We've been covering tents at Wilderness Times for years. We've reviewed and scored over 350 of them.

And the most common question we hear is still some version of: "I've read a lot of reviews. I still don't know which tent to get."

So we built something to fix that. Today we're launching Tent Finder — a free, interactive tool that takes everything in our reviewed tent database and puts it to work for you.

What Tent Finder Actually Does

The concept is simple: answer five questions about your trip, group, and budget.

Tent Finder returns your top matches instantly — pulled from a database of 350+ tents, all scored against the same independent criteria, and filtered to only show tents you can actually buy right now.

No sponsored results.

No brand placements.

Just the tents that match your answers, ranked by how well they score against our rubric.

How It Works

Tent Finder - Answer 5 Questions

When you open Tent Finder, you'll answer five quick questions about your camping style, group size, budget, and priorities. Based on your answers, the tool filters our full tent database and returns your personalized matches — ranked by how closely they fit what you're looking for.

Every tent in the results links directly to the full Wilderness Times review, so you can go as deep as you want on any match. And if you want to tweak your results — adjust the budget, change the season rating, filter by weight — you can do that right from the results page without starting over.

You can also have your results emailed to you for easy reference when you're ready to buy.

The Database Behind It

Tent Product Ratings & Review System

Every tent in Tent Finder comes from our independently reviewed database.

Each one has been evaluated against the same 7-criteria scoring rubric — no exceptions, no shortcuts, no sponsored placements influencing where anything ranks.

The seven criteria we score every tent on:

Because every tent is scored on the same rubric, Tent Finder can compare any tent in the database against any other — not just the handful a single reviewer happened to test this season. That consistency is what makes the matching actually work.

The 290+ tents currently available in Tent Finder are filtered from that larger database of 350+ to remove discontinued and out-of-stock models.

Every match you receive is something you can purchase today. The database is updated on an ongoing basis as new tents are reviewed and inventory changes.

"We built Tent Finder because we kept seeing the same thing: people spending hours trying to find the right tent and still not feeling confident in their choice. We've already done the hard work of reviewing 350 tents — Tent Finder just puts that database to work for you. Answer five questions, get your matches. That's it."

Built for Every Kind of Tent Buyer

Tent Finder - Fine-Tune Your Priorities

Tent Finder is designed to work whether you're a first-time buyer who doesn't know where to start, or an experienced backpacker who already knows their target specs and just wants to filter fast.

If you're new to tents: the five questions guide you through the decisions that actually matter, and the results give you a short list you can trust — without having to become an expert first.

If you know your gear: you can use the filters to cut straight to what you're looking for — a sub-2-pound solo backpacking tent under $300, or a 4-person family tent with a solid weather rating for under $400 — and see every option in our database that qualifies, ranked by score.

Why We Built This

The honest answer: because existing tools weren't doing the job:

  • Retailer filters show you what's in stock and what's on sale.
  • Algorithm-driven recommendation engines surface whatever earns the highest affiliate commission.
  • Sponsored gear roundups highlight whoever paid for placement.

None of that actually helps you find the right tent. It just makes you feel like you've done research when you haven't.

Wilderness Times doesn't accept payment for reviews or editorial placement.

Our tent scores exist because we think they're useful — and Tent Finder is us finally making that work more accessible. Every hour you spend cross-referencing gear sites is an hour you're not outside. We'd rather cut that short.
